WELCOME TO THE CHAOS!
I saw an article recently about how another game company is getting rid of their forums and telling everyone to go to Discord instead. Now, I love Discord, but it can't replace a forum. And the article (plus the original article that was written on this topic) made me look back and realize how much I missed forums. I would love to check my favorite ones each day, catch up on all the new posts/threads, and respond to many of them. I made a ton of friends on forums and it was easy to chat and keep up with them.
Besides that, I remembered how useful they were. These days it's feeds that speed by -- people who post art or questions or anything really getting buried by other stuff almost instantly, whether it's because there's so much being posted or the always changing ~algorithm~ that never seems to work in a single discernible way. And with Discord, which many companies are replacing their forums with, the channels serve as chats where things from months (even days or hours for popular servers hehehe) ago are nearly impossible to find again. There is a search function but sometimes it just doesn't work for what you're searching for.
I recall a number of times I googled a question about a game and instantly found the answer in that game/company's forum -- the topic was sometimes years old. It worked with questions about programs and creative processes and all kinds of stuff -- it was awesome. To do that now I'd need to join a new Discord server, attempt to figure out what keywords of the question would work best for the search and what channel to search in, hopefully find the answer and either leave the server or barely ever visit it again. Sure it's not many more clicks but it takes more time than I want to spend finding a quick answer. (I don't know if I'd even try to find the answer on Twitter or... Instagram? Facebook? And Tumblr, post tags work correctly about 12.4% of the time so there's that.)
In addition to all of the above, things like roleplaying, scheduled events such as book clubs or writing challenges, posting guides or tutorials, and other creative fun stuff tend to work best in a place where everything has a thread and every post in the threads has their own link!
Chaos Coterie came to be because I wanted a place for friends (old and new -- join us! ;D) to be able to chill out, not have the world/things they worked hard on/whatever go by and disappear in the blink of an eye and post their creations in their own threads where they'll stay up and be easy to find here! (also it's an excuse to see more kickass creative stuff go on and post some!)
Thanks for reading this frickin' ramble and please register if you want to join in the madness!
We welcome one and all to the Chaos Coterie!
( except assholes :) )
